Golfs Hidden Gems

The PGA championship gets underway today in New Jersey, just under a fortnight after the Open concluded in dramatic fashion at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. With such a stacked month of golf, interest in the sport is at a fever pitch, so we decided it would be the perfect time to take a look at what the sport can offer holidaymakers in the UK. The UK boasts some of the best Golf courses anywhere in the world, as was excellently demonstrated by the hosts of this years Open in South Ayrshire, Scotland. Over the years venues all over the UK have hosted major Golfing events, but booking a tee time for these more illustrious and internationally prestigious courses can be as difficult as hitting a hole in one! Instead, we have uncovered a few of golf’s hidden gems scattered throughout the UK (one from each country).

Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club SCOTLAND (Fortrose, Highland)
With over 500 courses to boast, Scotland is home to some of the most famous courses worldwide. It also houses a number of equally impressive, but far less well known, courses that are scattered throughout the country. Despite their quality and excellence, these hidden gems remain less well known and are subsequently ideal for holidaymakers. The Fortrose and Rosemarkie course near Inverness is one excellent example of this. The course is found on a spectacular landscape that stretches all the way from the clubhouse to a distant lighthouse situated at the far end of the beautiful coast line and offers up breathtaking views of the ocean surrounding Canonry Ness. For spectacle and scenery, the course is second-to-none.golf ball

Chiltern Forest Golf Club- ENGLAND (Buckinghamshire)
Set within the Chiltern Hills AONB, this outstanding 18 hole course is set against the stunning and postcard-worthy Wendover Woods and offers up some truly unforgettable and picturesque views of the Aylesbury Vale. The chalk escarpment foundation of the course means that it remains playable all year round, making it a fantastic course for holidaymakers in and around the Chiltern areas (which lays just NW of London and connects the counties of Berkshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire).

North Wales Golf Club – Wales (Llandudno)
Locted in the seaside town of Llandudno, the North Wales club comes with stunning views of the Conwy estuary all the way to Anglesey as well as parts of the famous and impressive Snowdonia Mountain range. Despite being less well known internationally, the course is among the finest and holds itself to the highest of standards (previously hosting more national and regional championships such as the Welsh Team Championships).

golf sunsetBelvoir Park NORTHERN IRELAND (Belfast)
A tranquil 136 acres of woodland houses this fantastic course. Users are treated to a day of superb golf in a setting that feels so secluded and rural that it could be 100 miles from the nearest urban dwellings, when in fact the city centre of Belfast lies just 2 miles away. Much like North Wales Golf Club, the course has a history of hosting more regional championships and as such it too prides itself on been impeccably kept. The club is also home to the highly rated ‘The View at Belvoir’ restaurant which offers a relaxed, informal atmosphere with high-quality food and unbeatable views of the city. The course effortlessly blends rural and urban to give holidaymakers to the area a unique experience that is hard to replicate.

These hidden gems really just offer an absolute fraction of the superb courses available to you when on your luxury self-catering holiday in the UK. Each part of the country offers its own unique and impressive landscapes and settings that help to make for some wonderful courses. If your Cottage Gems holiday rental happens to be in the areas above, then be sure to give them a go, if not do some research and see what gems you can unearth near you. After that, all that is left to do is play!

Weatherproof Facilities to Look for with Cottage Gems

It would be fair to say that, for all of its positives, Britain’s weather would not be regarded as one of the country’s most reliable or attractive aspects. When planning a UK based holiday the weather can often seem like an off-putting hindrance, especially if the first few weeks of this year’s ‘summer’ are anything to go by. However, whilst you can never truly rule out the chances of seeing some rain when holidaying in the UK, the weather shouldn’t put a dampener on any planned breaks you may have, nor should it prevent you looking all together. There are a whole range of facilities offered by luxurious self-catering properties that could well mean you don’t want to leave the house in the first place! At the very least, these features will ensure there is more than enough for you and your family to do whilst on holiday should it rain and are well worth consideration when booking accommodation.

Irainndoor Swimming Pool
– Many Cottage Gems listings come fully equipped with heated Indoor swimming pools. You can enjoy all the glamour and style that comes with having your own private swimming pool. Should the weather take a turn for the worse you can head to the sanctuary of your own private water pool and watch the hours slip away from the warmth and comfort of your pool. It may sound like a luxury to have one, but luxury is exactly what you get with Cottage Gems and far more properties than you might expect offer this option.

Games Room
– Enjoy some healthy competition with your own fully-equipped Games Room. Great for families and large groups, the inclusion of a games room will ensure hours of fun and good-sport should the weather not hold out for a day or so. There is something for everyone with these rooms; commonly offered sports include snooker, table tennis, darts, table football and table ice hockey.

Museums
– With such a rich history, the UK is home to some of the most diverse and popular Museums in the world- and these are not just found in London! Take advantage of the numerous unconventional museums frequently found locally in small towns and villages. These quirky places often end up being among the highest rated, and most memorable, parts of many holidaymakers self-catering breaks.

Sauna
– Sauna’s are becoming more and more widely available with self-catered holiday homes. Many shared cottage complexes and even some individual properties now offer the use of private Sauna’s where you can relax. Alternatively, free access to local gyms and other places that offer sauna use are common and are an easy and weatherproof way to spend some time unwinding whilst on holiday.

Romantic Meal for Two
– With the ability to prepare your own meals in self-catering, you can surprise your partner with an intimate and spontaneous meal should the weather restrict you for other optionscouple2. Alternatively, both you and your partner can spend a few hours preparing a three course meal together, using locally sourced ingredients and food.

The listed examples above are just a few of the great facilities and options that are at your disposal, regardless of the weather, when holidaying in the UK. Click on any of the headings above to take a look at what Cottage Gems has to offer in each of the respective categories and you’ll begin to see just how feasible and enjoyable a UK based holiday can be, even if the weather isn’t on side.

Best of Glamping in the UK

Best of ‘Glamping’ in the UK

‘Glamping’ is considered by some to be the future of camping, and by others the downfall of it! One thing is for sure, it is an excellent and unique way to spend a holiday and is an experience hard to replicate. As the name suggests ‘Glamping’ (or Glamorous Camping) can be as high-end and glamorous as many conventional property choices, if not more so. With summer approaching, the glamping season is really kicking in (although many of these unique properties can be comfortably stayed in all year round). So just what does this strange and wonderful experience have to offer? Just some of the very best features and perks of this holiday are listed below.

Home comfortsbedroom
Enjoy king-sized double beds and internet! A range of common home-comfort features and fixtures are frequently made available at these sites so that those less keen on roughing it out in a sleeping bag can now enjoy a good night’s sleep in a high-quality setting, whilst still retaining a sense of connection to the great-outdoors.

Hot Tubs
Holiday in true style. The inclusion of a hot tub is not an uncommon feature of many glamping sites. Need we say more? It doesn’t get much more glamorous and relaxing then being able to enjoy the confinements of your own private hot-tub.

Seclusion
Much like camping, this high-end alternative retains a tranquil sense of escapism and seclusion that comes with the vast, country settings in which this type of accommodation is more commonly found. Although often these sites remain well situated to nearby gardenvillages and towns should you wish to venture out of this more quiet setting.

Ecotourism
This type of tourism has become increasingly important, and popular, in recent years and it would be fair to say that glamping ticks a lot of the boxes needed to be seen as respectful of its ideas. The main principle revolves around ensuring visitors to fragile, and largely undisturbed, natural settings enjoy the area with a minimal impact upon the environment. Those promoting the practice aim to highlight the importance of respecting the landscape so that everyone can better enjoy and appreciate the beauty and importance of these settings.

Why not take a look at just what this increasingly popular trend has to offer, and you could find yourself camping in true style and comfort this summer: https://www.cottagegems.com/glamping-and-luxury-camping/

A luxury cottage holiday in one of Britain’s national parks could be ideal for those keen to holiday in a naturally beautiful area with meadows, moorlands, hills, fields or mountains and stunning natural landscapes. So unspoilt are these areas that they have been granted National Park status and are protected areas preserved for all to enjoy.

There are 15 National Parks in the UK, but Britain’s national parks are no well-kept secret so if you are looking for privacy and seclusion you may be better off choosing to holiday in an area of countryside more off the beaten path.

The national parks in Britain to choose from include in England; the Norfolk Broads, Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Lake District, the North Yorks Moors, Northumberland, the Peak District, the South Downs, the Yorkshire Dales and, the New Forest, in Wales the Brecon Beacons, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Snowdonia and in Scotland the Cairngorms National Park, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. In addition there are six National Parks in Ireland, for those keen to explore the Emerald Isle. If you are looking for tranquillity, a luxury self-catering break in Ireland with its sparser population could be the perfect choice. National Parks in Ireland include Ballycroy National Park, Connemara National Park, the Burren, Killarney National Park and the Wicklow Mountains National Park.

Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Like the UK’s National Parks, these are beautiful landscapes. The AONBs are also recognised and protected for their distinctive character and natural beauty. There are 46 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain (33 in England, four in Wales, one which covers both England and Wales and 8 in Northern Ireland), so there is plenty of choice.

If you adore walking, cycling, wildlife watching or horse riding, a stay in one of the UK’s leafy and green areas of outstanding natural beauty could be for you.

Apple Cottage, Somerset:

Old Guadaloupe, Leicestershire:

Wander around Melton Mowbray with your darling and make the most of the stunning Leicestershire countryside together. Cook up a BBQ on your private decking on a warm summer evening, and then eat your dessert in your exclusive hot tub.

The Lakeside Yurt, Worcestershire:

YurtFor something a little more unusual, this Yurt in Worcestershire is sure to impress. For the most luxurious ‘glamping’ experience, bask in the hot tub with your beau, you’ll never look at camping in the same way again.

Hot tubs are by no means a necessity when longing for a little more passion, but they can definitely help! Be sure that where ever you choose to spend your next romantic retreat, be it a cottage, lodge, cabin or yurt, that your property has a hot tub – because where else is better to reconnect with the one you love?
