Kirkwall is the capital ‘city’ of Orkney although with a population of under 8000 people it is by no means a typical city. Located by the sea, Kirkwall is an attractive place for a luxury cottage holiday and conveniently located for exploring much of the mainland plus for hopping over to Shapinsay, another of the Orkney isles.

Another factor making Kirkwall appealing for a luxury cottage break is it being home to the main airport in Orkney, making it a convenient choice for many. What’s more, the town itself is attractive and charming enough with stone buildings, cafes, shops and a pretty harbour. Also in town is a theatre, museums, a swimming pool, a cathedral and a helpful tourist information centre on West Castle Street.

With ferries operating between Kirkwall and Shapinsay plus with a location only 15 miles from Stromness, Kirkwall has lots to offer for special luxury breaks away. Stromness itself is recommended for a visit and also enjoys an excellent location for discovering the southern islands of Orkney. Wherever you choose to stay in Orkney, these wonderful Isles are an excellent place for those who love wildlife watching and truly want to be free from the stresses and strains of ‘real life’ whilst on a luxury cottage holiday.
