Plymouth

The UK’s ‘Ocean City’ is tucked neatly into the bottom corner of Devon, bordering the neighbouring county of Cornwall. Owing to its positioning, this famous waterfront city is extremely popular with holidaymakers and offers stunning views of the ocean horizon. The area also boasts a rich history; it is here at the Barbican and Sutton Harbour that the Mayflower famously set sail for the New World. Take advantage of Plymouth's outstanding combination of country and coastal scenery (Dartmoor National Park is found just north of the city) and be sure to check out Cottage Gems' selection of high-quality self-catering accommodation in the area.

Places to Visit
  • The breathtaking Dartmoor National Park is just 10 miles from the city and is a must for visitors to the area. The rich and diverse wildlife is matched only by the magnificence of the setting itself and it is sure to be one of the highlights of your journey. Take a pleasant stroll through a section of the park by taking one of the designated walking routes or enjoy a cycle through the area. If you are using Cottage Gems’ pet-friendly accommodation then this is a great place for your dog to come and enjoy.
  • Visit the historical Barbican bay and re-trace the Pilgrim Fathers steps. The area is also home to the fantastic National Marine aquarium, perfect for kids.
  • Plymouth Hoe not only boasts dramatic views of the area but is also full of history as well as things to see and do. Conquer the climb to the top of the Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse and you and your family can enjoy the great views of the city that await you there. The Royal Citadel, the war memorial  and Tinside Lido are also found here.
Things to Do
  • Spend some time at the beach. Soak in the sun at Whitsand Bay or take a splash in the water at Mothecombe.
  • Enjoy some retail therapy in the city centre. There is a huge range of excellent shops, restaurants and pubs for you to try out and these often include a wonderful mixture of independent and more well-established brands. Markets are also regularly hosted at the centre, so be sure to try some of the locally sourced food and produce available if the market is on.
  • See what’s on at the fantastic Theatre Royal, home to some of the best productions in the country.
  • Take a boat tour of Drake’s Island and the Naval Dockyards. You can even get a behind the scenes tour of the Naval base at Davenport.
