Alnwick

The picturesque setting of Alnwick has made it a renowned destination for holiday-makers in the Northumberland area. With a range of luxury self-catered accommodation to match the beauty of the area, Alnwick is home to many attractions and is well placed for a rural and coastal holiday with Cottage Gems.

Places to Visit

  • Watch history come to life at Alnwick Castle. The Castle is a wonderful place to visit and offers up marvellous grounds and structures (such as the Hotspur Tower) that cannot be missed. A more piece of history for the castle saw it featured as Hogwarts in various scenes for the Harry Potter movies. The castle was also in Downton Abbey and used in the BBC’s The Hollow Crown series, based on the various historical plays of William Shakespeare.

  • The Alnwick Gardens are a sight to behold. These gardens date back three centuries and, having completed a redevelopment in 2006, is now an essential stop for visitors to Alnwick. The Poison Garden featured within the area is a stand-out part of the experience. This unconventional garden houses many poisonous species of plant that are not to be missed.

  • Northumberland National Park, located just over 20 miles from Alnwick, is well worth the drive. This impressive park is an immersive experience. Be at one with the vast nature the park has to offer. A section of the historic Hadrian’s Wall lies within the Park.

  • The Grade 1 listed Brizlee tower (which was renovated and re-opened to the public a few years ago) is an impressive site and is worth visiting.

Things to Do

  • Walk along part of the iconic Hadrian’s Wall with the Hadrian's Wall path. This famous attraction is of international prestige and is just an hour’s drive from Alnwick. This World Heritage Site makes a strong claim to being the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England and is simply an essential stop for those staying in Northumberland. With much of the original wall still standing the path offers up a remarkable journey.

  • Take advantage of the weekly farmers markets. Locals from surrounding areas travel to these well-regarded markets to exchange goods. Buy local produce and take in the atmosphere.

  • The towns Bailiffgate and Northumberland Fusiliers Museum's are full of charm and intrigue and are a great way to spend a day out learning about the culture and history of the area. The Fusilier's museum admission is include din the price of admission to the castle and Bailiffgate is just £4 for adults and a £1 for kids!
