What Northumbria Offers for Luxury Cottage Breaks

A luxury break in this part of England should be ideal for those who enjoy walking.  The Northumberland National Park is extensive and takes in various paths by Hadrian’s Wall as well as a number of National Trust historical sites.  Hadrian’s Wall, an iconic English heritage site snakes for 73 miles through the Northumberland countryside. Besides Hadrian’s Wall, the castles of Northumbria have to be some of this county’s top attractions.  Bamburgh Castle is located right next to the beach and enjoys a spectacular setting.  Alnwick Castle is extensive and has famously featured in the Harry Potter films.  The National Trust’s Lindisfarne Castle is simply stunning and picture perfect.  This special castle is accessed via a tidal causeway or by boat.  Last but not least, Dunstanburgh Castle is a ruin protected by the National Trust and enjoys a scenic coastal location.  Do note though that this castle is not at all easily accessible but is an enjoyable long walk for the able bodied.

Wildlife is also in abundance here and bird watching and other wildlife watching is a popular pastime. Take a boat trip out to the Farne Islands and enjoy watching hundreds of seals basking on the rocky shores. You can also spot otters, badgers, deer and much more in varied areas of Northumberland.

For time in a country town on a luxury break, enjoy meandering around Alnwick or Hexham with its many tea shops.  For coastal gems visit Alnmouth, Craster, Boulmer and Bamburgh.  We hope you’ve found our hints and tips on Northumbria helpful, for more information see our guide to luxury cottage holidays in Northumberland
