Surrounded by a beautiful patchwork of fields and hills, Oakdale is a large village that was purpose built in the 20th century in the countryside of the Sirhowy Valley to house the workers of the Oakdale colliery which has now been replaced by a business park. For those who enjoy walking and cycling, there are acres and acres of fabulous countryside to enjoy in the Sirhowy Valley when on a luxury cottage break. What’s more, with the Brecon Beacons National Park just an easy drive away, you can be walking through some of Wales’ best scenery in no time at all.

The town of Newport is just 10 miles from Oakdale and well worth a visit. There you can enjoy the architecturally significant National Trust managed Tredgar House which is a 17th century residence set on a 90 acres estate which is said to be one of the best of its kind in the UK. For another relaxing day out, idyllic country walks can be taken in Sirhowy Valley Country Park where you will find a staggering 1000 acres of grass and woodlands.

Oakdale also benefits by being just 9 ½ miles from Caerphilly where you can experience the chance to live history for the day whilst on your luxury break. Visiting Caerphilly Castle, one of the biggest in the UK, the site of the remains of the once impressive Roman Gelligaer Fort and the fascinating and supposedly haunted Llancaiach Fawr Manor which dates back to around 1645 makes for a great day out. The restored manor residence is furnished and fitted out in the spirit of its period with guides playing the roles of servants.

For a luxury self-catering holiday to remember a stay in or close to Oakdale could be a great choice.
