Powys is the heart of Wales, and home to the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park mountain range. This is a great area in which to rent a luxury cottage for those with an adventurous spirit.

The Beautiful Brecon BeaconsHill walking in the Brecon Beacons mountain range

The Brecon Beacons is a naturally beautiful region, where you will find spectacular mountains, lakes and rivers. There are a huge variety of walks and hikes available, long or short and suitable for all ability levels, over rough and rugged or lush and green terrain. Mountain bikers will also find the Brecon Beacons the perfect area to pursue their sport.

The rich agricultural tradition of the Brecon Beacons National Park is reflected in the miles and miles of colourful field patterns which can be viewed from the peaks. Prehistoric monuments and settlements dot the landscape, and there are plenty of quirky and individual towns to explore by day or night.

Talybont on Usk is a lovely village in which to enjoy a day or even to stay for your entire luxury holiday, with the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal passing through and a wide range of watering holes to while away the evenings. From Talybont you will find easy access to both the Brecon Beacons and also the Black Mountains, and the nearby Blaen-y-Glyn waterfalls are picture-perfect. The river Usk is a fantastic spot for wild brown trout and salmon fishing.

One of the most beautiful valleys in this region is the Georgian market town of Crickhowell, which is the perfect place to enjoy a romantic break for 2. The town has many thriving local independent shops and numerous restaurants serving up healthy and tasty food. Right in the town centre stands the Norman Crickhowell Castle, of which only 2 towers remain. The lovely Bear Hotel pub is renowned for having served ale since the last 15th Century.

Our best recommended attractions in Powys and Mid-Wales:

•    For romantic evenings, Powys is a brilliant place to enjoy stargazing. Minimal pollution and a lack of large cities mean that the sky can be very clear and it’s often very easy to pick out constellations and even distant planets.
•    Powis Castle and Garden in Welshpool is a stunning National Trust estate with wonderful Italian and French style gardens set around the medieval fortress which is built high on a rock above the terraces.
•    Pen-y-Fan is the highest mountain in Southern Wales and the gem of the Brecon Beacons, at just under 3,000 feet. From the summit you can see as far down as North Devon.
